UNESKO PARK "YUGYDVA"

The National Park “YugudVa” was formed on April 23, 1994, on the northwestern slope of the Urals.
It is one of the largest parks on earth. It is nearly 1,2 million hectares. It is in seventh place among the ten largest parks in the world. In 1995 its territory was included into the list of the World Natural Legacy of UNESCO. It is the first Russian national park which was included in this list.

The vegetation is rich and various. In the mountains, you can see coniferous and mixed forests, luxuriant subalpine and alpine grasslands with alpine and arctic tundra. In autumn you can pick bilberries, cloudberries, red bilberries, cranberries. In the park live bears, deer, polar foxes, squirrels, and wood-grouses. The main fish in the mountain rivers is grayling. In spring salmon swim to the mouth of the Barents Sea for spawning.

If you want to forget your daily life there is no better place to rest than in our park.

Tourism and Recreation in the Park

Each year, the tourist routes of the National Park become more popular. The administration of the park pays attention to the creation of new routes and the maintenance of existing ones. Tourist bases are continuously improved, while shelters, recreation sites and viewing areas are constantly being constructed.

Among the people visiting the territory of the park are Russians and Komi Republic residents, as well as citizens of Finland, the Baltic states, Poland, Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic. The annual number of visitors exceeds 4000 people; 2000 of them use the organised routes and services of the park. The average visit period is 7-8 days. The most popular routes include climbing up the peaks Managara and Narodnaya, the Nepristupny range and rafting down the Kozym, Shchuger and Podcherem rivers.

How to get there

The Directorate of the park is located in the Vuktyl town, and its subsidiaries – in the towns of Pechora and Inta. You can get to the park from the towns Vuktyl, Inta, Pechora, the villages Synya, Aranets, Kosyu, Kozym-rudnik, Kozhim, Priuralskiy and others.

There is one settlement on the territory of the park – the Podcherie village, which can be reached by bus from Vuktyl. Other settlements are located within tens of kilometres from the park’s borders.
Appropriate flights routes are: Moscow - Syktyvkar, St Petersburg - Syktyvkar, Syktyvkar – Ukhta, Syktyvkar – Pechora.

The towns Inta, Pechora, the villages Synya, Aranets, Kosyu, Kozym-rudnik are located on the north railway Moscow-Vorkuta. The fast trains stop only in Pechora and Inta.
The best way to get to the northern part of the park (the Sub-Polar Urals) is by train. A local train runs between Pechora and Inta 3 times a day.

There is also a dirt-road from Inta to the mountains, suitable for GAS-66 and URAL-type cars. It is a 80km drive to the Kozym river ford, 100km to the Sanavozh base, 130 km to the Zelannyi base, where a quartz mine is located.

Another dirt-road runs from the station Kozhim-rudnik, subsequently adjoining the Inta-Zelannyi road after the Kozhim river crossing.

The southern part of the park (the Northern Urals) can be reached from Vuktyl, where you can arrive from the Northern railway station in Ukhta by bus (about 230km). The regular bus to Vuktyl leaves from the railway station and the bus station in Ukhta. The road from Vuktyl runs eastwards and crosses the upstream regions of the rivers Ilych, Podcherie, Shchuger. You can reach the sources of the rivers Podcherem and Shchuger taking this road. The road is departmental (it belongs to “Gazprom” and is used to maintain the gas pipeline “SijanieSevera”, which runs through the territory of the park). A special permit is needed to use the road, which can be ordered in advance. In July-August the road may be closed due to the high forest fire risk.

The estuaries of the Shchuger and Podcherem rivers can be reached by water transport on the Pechora River from Vuktyl and Pechora. The village of Aranets on the Pechora River is 50 km way from Pechora, and the route is serviced with a regular bus. The tourist path from Aranets to the border of the park is 50km long.

Certain regions of the park can be reached by helicopter from Pechora and Vuktyl, where there are flight formations available, or alternatively from Inta airport.
