CONQUERING THE URAL MOUNTAINS

The Urals — a mountain range between the East European and Western-Siberian plains. The length of this mountain range is more than 2000 km and the width is from 40 to 150 km. The Urals is a treasury of various minerals, such as malachite, beryl, quartz, topaz, etc. There are also a lot of lakes, mountain rivers, and waterfalls.

The Urals was formed in a late Palaeozoic, during an epoch of intensive mountain building. Formation of a mountain range of the Urals began about 350 million years ago and ended approximately 200 million years ago. Since the first annals concerning the XI century, Russians named the Urals as the Siberian Stones, the Big Stone, or the Terrestrial Belt.

The pearl of the Ural Mountains is considered to be the subpolar Ural Mountains, home to the highest peaks of the range. The highest of them, the National Mountain, has a height of 1896 meters. According to a Mansi legend, all Ural mountains were formed from this one.

For its beauty, the mountain Manaraga became the queen of the Ural Mountains and the trademark of subpolar Urals. Its height is 1663 meters. Its name means “the Bear paw.” It received this name for the external similarity: outlines reminds the viewer of a huge sharp-clawed bear's paw.

One of the steepest mountains is the Sabre. It has a height of 1497 meters. It is a steep rock, more than 150 meters towering over the peaks surrounding it. As a whole, all Sabre's ridge consists of uncountable rocky crests and deep gorges. Climbing the Manaraga or the Sabre is very difficult, and only the most skilled climbers usually attempt these peaks.

One more mountain is Telpoziz, with a height of 1617 meters — the highest peak of the Northern Ural Mountains, and it is always “in bad mood.” From Mansi language, its name literally means a "mountain of a nest of winds." It is visited by tourists very seldom because of constant bad weather and strong winds. According to a legend, the god of the northern wind lives on this mountain.
