HISTORY OF THE KOMI REPUBLIC

In the Komi Republic, the day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repressions is commemorated on October 30. Komi people live on the land of The Gulag Archipelago. There were many such establishments. It is not still established how many tortured and killed people were there. After the WWII in Komi were three groups of people: so-called “recruited”, came for earrings and those, who got there by placement. In spite of the fact that native people didn’t like prisoners, there were not affairs or uprisings. All the people were peaceful. 

Gulag influenced the history of the Komi Republic. It changed economics. Mines were built, such as in Vorkuta and Ukhta. There was built a railway. But all that things were made with the help of incredible efforts. Komi people – is a Finno-Ugric people. Komi people live in the Komi Republic and also in different parts of Russia. For example, in Sverdlovsk, Murmansk Oblast, Omsk, Tyumen Oblasts, in the Nenets, Yamalo-Nenets and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrugs. 


The Komi national culture is century-old and has unique components. For example clothes. The Komi traditional clothes are in general similar to the clothing of North-Russians. But women’s clothes are more various. The base of the women’s costume was a shirt and a sarafan. Over the sarafan was a jacket. As overclothes women wore homespun linen clothes; in winter – a sheepskin fur coat. At holidays they were beautiful in the best clothes: from fine silk, broadcloth and linen. Men’s clothes were a shirt worn outside trousers, a belt, and linen trousers. As overclothes men wore a cloth caftan, in winter – a fur coat. 

The traditional Komi cuisine consists of vegetable, meat and fish produce cabbage soup, okroshka, different porridges, boiled, salt, dried and fried fish, and meat. The most important role has baked goods: bread, thick pancakes, pies. Traditional drinks are tea, herb and berry water, bread kvass, birch sap and compote.

The main trades of the Komi people are wood treatment, weaving and fur and hide treatment. 

The Komi spiritual culture is very rich. There are different genres in Komi folklore: myths, epic stories, legends, fairytales, songs, proverbs and sayings. A Komi ornament is colourful and symbolical.A very specific field of cattle-breeding is reindeer-breeding, especially in northern regions.
