SYSOLSKY DISTRICT

Welcome to the Sysolski District!

Perhaps you know that Komi is the lungs of Europe, and Sysolski District even if it is small it is a part of it. At the end of the 15th century, Sysola was an independent volost of Bychegodskaya land at the head of which were elders, sotniks, and priests. The centre of that volost was Votcha – the biggest settlement on the river Sysola. The 15th of July 1929 is considered to be the date of birth the Sysolski district. It was after the census of lands and population. The area of the district is 6,14 thousand square kilometres, and there live about 15500 people. One of the main reaches of the Sysolski district is its forests where we can find several cranberry bogs that are protected.

This district is very interesting, especially for those, who are interested in the preservation of the environment: there are several wildlife preserves. There are 11 population aggregates the most popular of which are Vizinga (the centre of the district) and Kuratovo.

They are not so far from Syktyvkar, only 88 km. That is why it is very easy to go there. The bus №511 goes to Vizinga every day, and the bus №515 goes to Kuratovo on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Why should you visit these places? Everybody wants to be healthy, fit and always in a good mood. Our northland is the best place for going in for sport, but our sport is not boring as in gym. Our sport is very cheerful especially in winter: driving in a sleigh, hunting skiing, bungee jumping, playing at snowballs, riding, driving on snowmobiles in a company with Russians. And you do not know still about our winter temperature. Everybody should try to live when it is 30 degrees below zero! If you try it, your friends will want to visit our land too! It is unforgettable, but so wonderful, especially the real Russian bath after the all day long being in the street. You can know something about Russian fortunes and celebrate New Year’s Eve. 

Summer is also a good season for visiting Sysolski District. There are also many ways of relaxation: admire the scenery during fishing early in the morning and then eating fresh fish soup, hunting after gamebird, bear and elk and eating a shish kebab, picking up mushrooms and berries in the woods, picnics with the friend circle. 

If you are not an active person, you can visit different places of interests, such as I. A. Kuratov museum in Kuratovo, a historical and cultural museum, a room-museum “Hunt and fishing”, a Holy Trinity church, a natural-ethnographic complex “Katyd pom”, huts of Baba-Yaga, Vodyanoy and Bannik in Vizinga. 

Kuratov Museum of literature heroes

It was opened in honour of the first Komi poet I. A. Kuratov. There are many interesting museum pieces made of wood, birch bark that was used by Komi people for keeping house. It takes place in the real izba, which is very large: 4 halls, inner porch, cattle shed. There are some stands devoted to I. A. Kuratov, his bust and his works. There are two wood figures in front of the museum. The house is the same that was during landlord’s lifetime.

Recreation Center “Serebryannye Rodniki”

You can visit here a real Russian bath – to rest with body and soul. In winter everything is provided for driving on snowmobiles, visiting a room-museum, eating fresh fish soup. In summer – boating through the beautiful Komi nature, playing different games, eating fresh fish soup. Recommendations: you should have bath accessories – a towel, slippers, and a bathing cap.

Natural-ethnographic complex “Katyd pom”

A year-round tour. In winter: acquaintance with traditional winter rites, making different amulets, fortune-telling… Is it mysterious? You should visit this place and to try it. You can also drive in a sleigh, playing at snowballs, riding, driving on snowmobiles and of course celebrating the New Year. In summer: acquaintance with traditional winter rites, making different amulets, visiting a Russian bath, eating summer fruits and vegetables and traditional food, fishing, walking at hunting paths. So everything for active having rest.

Museum of History and Culture of the Sysolski district

Museum pieces were started to collect in 1968. To the opening day, there were collected 500 exhibits. The museum was opened in 1970 in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of V. I. Lenin. At that time the museum took place on the 1st floor of the regional library. Then, in 1980, it was transferred in the building of the night school. In 1997 the museum got its own building. And now it is opened for visitors. There you can see different things, for example, subjects of labour and everyday life of Vizinga peasants.
