The city is located 345 km from Syktyvkar. The town was known as Izhma until 1957. During the Soviet era, a corrective labour camp was located here. The building of the railway working village has appeared. The building of the first felled houses took place exactly near the modern railway station. Railway station "Izhma" became a hub of the railroad, "Vorkuta - Kotlas" and in the autumn 1940was officially docking "golden rail" going from north to south.
In 1942 built a station, which survived until to the present day. New houses for railway workers had been built. During wartime on the station, Izhma built a school, depo, smithing and wheeled workshops. Izhma renamed Sosnogorsk in July 1957.
