SYKTYVKAR - THE CAPITAL OF KOMI

The wonderful city of the North is Syktyvkar. It is the capital of the Komi Republic. It was founded in 1780 by Ekaterina II (Catherine the Great). At that time and up to 1930 Syktyvkar had the name “Ust-Sysolsk”, which means “the city on the River Sysola” from Komi language.

The history of Syktyvkar began in the 16th century, when Komi people, which lived in other settlements near the River Sysola, came to its territory. During the 19th century, Ust-Sysolsk became the big trade centre in the North. On the 26th of March, the town changed its name from Ust-Sysolsk into Syktyvkar.

Since 1936 Syktyvkar has been the capital of the Komi Republic. Nowadays Syktyvkar is the big political, economic, cultural, educational and trade centre of the Komi Republic. The population of Syktyvkar is about 235 006 people (2011).

Like any other city, Syktyvkar has also its features. First, it is the modern city and there are a lot of places of interest, such as theatres, cinemas, museums, libraries, sports centres, disco clubs and many others. Syktyvkar is also an educational centre or student city because the biggest Universities and Institutes are situated here. Life is really in full swing here! And the climate in Syktyvkar is the warmest in the Komi Republic.
